The past day or two, I’ve been learning how to build stuff with blender. Thought I would start out from scratch with something simple so I modelled the first thing (and simplest shape) thing I could find on my desk.

It was a lot easier than I first thought. I created a bezier curve for the clip, then mapped a circle shape to the curve. Added a shiny material to the object and then rendered.
I’m finding that building organic models are a lot harder to do than simple objects. Guess that just comes with practice.
Woke up this morning with some wonderful news. The
Spore release date has been announced – 7th September 2008.
For those who don’t know what Spore is, you have been living under a rock. Spore is the next game to be released by Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, Sim City, etc.
Basically the idea is you start of playing the game as a single cell organism, and you grow and develop your creature eventually exploring the universe.
You actually get to build your creature with the built-in editor. Kinda like a simplified 3D blender (which is why I think it is great). Here is a sample creature I found somewhere:

Probably the best demo explaining alot of the concepts is on youtube. It is a little old, but it should give you an idea on what Spore is all about.
Looks like I’m going to be rather ‘busy’ in 6 months, and 24 days (who’s counting – check the countdown on the side).
I’ve been following the Blender 2.3 manual, and I’ve created my very first gingerbread man. Everyone, meet ‘Gus’. Not bad for a first attempt (I build him without following the manual word for word).
Its rather simple, but you have to start somewhere. Not bad for a first attempt.
Thought I would change the theme to reflect the kind of stuff I’m looking at right now,
blender.
I’ve got holidays next week, so between getting myself organised with getting a fish tank, I might see what I can do with blender and make some stuff with it.
